Mid-Spring Favorites

My favorite season has been “officially” here since March, but it took a bit longer than that for actual spring-like weather has arrived into my corner of the world—and I’m convinced there’s not a more magical time of year. Here are some of the things I’ve been enjoying as the world wakes up from its winter-y slumber:

Books: Back in March, I started reading Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, finished the first part, was enjoying it, and haven’t picked it back up since then. I haven’t picked up any non-Bible books since then, actually. The perils of being a mood reader (and having other things to do). I don’t know when I’ll feel like reading again, so I won’t make any promises about a time frame or what I will or won’t end up reading, although I will finished Notes from Underground next since I already started it. I also have a fairytale retelling loaned to me by a coworker that’s will be up next. And then I recently purchased The Weight of Glory by C. S. Lewis and The Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie, and, so either of those could beat out other long-standing books on my TBR. But again, no promises.

Movies/Shows/YouTube videos: I’m lumping these together because I really haven’t been watching anything these past few months other than the new Doctor Strange movie (which I wouldn’t consider a favorite—I haven’t been into Marvel movies for years). Lately I’ve had the urge to rewatch Little Women again and to revisit the 1985 Anne of Green Gables adaptation, but so far I haven’t done either.

Songs: The Wailin’ Jennys has been on repeat for a while, so to name a few: “Wildflowers,” “The Devil’s Paintbrush Road,” “Glory Bound,” “The Valley,” and “The Parting Glass.” Some old favorites (“Old Churchyard,” “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” etc.) have been thrown in the mix as well. Around Holy Week, “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted” by Fernando Ortega was on repeat. Other songs of note: “Iron Horse” (Mean Mary), “Ya Habibi” (GIMS/Mohamed Ramadan), “BRIGHTSIDE” (The Lumineers), and the whole of Bruce Babad’s album A Tribute to Paul Desmond.

Drinks: Iced coffee/cold brew with cream; iced earl grey (unsweetened); iced mint tea with stevia; creamy root beer Zevia

Foods: Lemon garlic baked salmon with rice and green beans; roasted potatoes tossed in olive oil, lemon, garlic, and herbs; brioche dinner rolls; fried egg sandwiches with everything bagel seasoning; fluffy pineapple banana green smoothies; apple-cinnamon baked oatmeal bites with maple syrup; cacio e pepe; fresh veggies (carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, celery); fresh fruit (pineapple, strawberries, blueberries); vanilla cake with whipped white chocolate ganache; orange ginger carrot cake

Moments: picking out new plants at a greenhouse; the foliage of fields and trees slowly filling in with each passing day; sunny, moderate weather where the breeze cools the warmth just enough; pale blue skies dotted with fluffy clouds; visiting ducks and geese at the park; the lingering scent on my fingertips after I rub them over the leaves of a peppermint plant; new wildflowers and blossoms springing up every week; mid-day sunlight dancing through branches
