Mid-Summer Favorites

Technically, this post should be called “Late Summer Favorites” considering today’s date, but the theme must go on (and I’m holding onto summer for as long as it lasts). Here are some of the things I’ve been enjoying these past few months:

Books: I’ve started three books this summer that are still yet to be finished: The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization (Vishal Mangalwadi), The Weight of Glory (C. S. Lewis), and the fairytale retelling I mentioned in my last post. At this point I’ll be happy if I finish them by the end of the year.

Movies/Shows/YouTube videos: My show and movie consumption is always low to nonexistent when the weather is warm, so there hasn’t been much going on for this category. I have re-watched a few favorite cartoons from when I was younger (won’t say which—gotta keep up some poor attempt at mystery!) and was pleasantly surprised to find out they’re still funny. Also, I watched the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion and thoroughly enjoyed seeing my favorite Austen story on the screen. As far as Youtube videos go, Tasting History with Max Miller has been my favorite channel this summer.

Songs: Some have hot girl summer, some have space girl summer, but I’ve had French pop summer. And by French pop I mean a lot of GIMS songs—“Tout donner”, “Loin” [this is not the same as the English word, by the way; who would’ve thought a French song would use French?], “Bella”, “ABCD”, “Ma Beauté”…you get the idea. This phase was especially replayed during early and mid-summer. On the other hand, I’ve also had a selection of other genres peppered in: “Song in My Head” (Madison Cunningham), “Decode” (Paramore), “Ach Natascha” (Ivan Rebroff), “Talk of the Town” (NEEDTOBREATHE), most of the Fiddler on the Roof movie soundtrack—and this past week, “Song of Women” (The HU) almost exclusively. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Drinks: Mostly cold brew with cream or homemade lemonade sweetened with stevia. My lack of iced tea is almost shameful but it is what it is.

Foods: Southwest chopped salad with chili lime vignette; chopped Asian-inspired salads; tropical smoothies; biscuits with peach preserves; fluffy oat pancakes with blueberry compote; cookies and cream ice cream in a waffle cone; watermelon ice pops; crunchy beef tacos with poblano peppers, fresh tomatoes, and onions; chocolate almond protein bites; almond maracons from a local coffee shop; spicy chicken sandwiches with Gouda cheese, peppadew peppers, and chipotle aioli on ciabatta rolls; barbeque flatbreads with pickled jalapeños, onions, and chicken; wood-fire margarita pizza; Southern chicken and waffles; blackened mahi mahi sandwich with lemon aioli; greek quinoa salad with chickpeas

Moments: Foot tours of historic neighborhoods; watching ducks and geese at the pond; the vibrance of every green thing in the midst of humid heat; finding an unexpected toad in early evening; the first shoots of zinnias climbing taller and taller until finally bursting with shades of red, orange, and pink; the sweetness of a breeze on a hot day; trying an nearly 100-year-old ice cream shop for the first time; rock hounding; hummingbird’s and bees’ daily flower visits; daylight lasting until nearly ten o’clock; bright blue skies dotted with tuffs and swoops of clouds; mist gathering over verdant fields in the hour before the sun fully rises; visiting a new greenhouse and coming home with a few new plants; playing volleyball poorly but with a lot of laughs; gliding in a pontoon along the surface of a lake

What have you enjoyed this summer?
